Moving Well – Fall 2025
Theme: The Beginning
One of my favorite movies has always been the “Sound of Music”. I love Julie Andrews! In the movie, while sitting on the mountain, she sings a song with the children about starting at the beginning. This makes a lot of sense even though it seems so obvious! I decided that maybe, following that line of reasoning, the beginning would be a great place to start with the fall movement lessons!! The beginning gives us a foundation; the basics upon which further learning of any skill can grow. In the book “Clear Thinking”, Shane Parrash discusses the work of Peter Kaufaman who states that “mastering the basics….is the key to becoming ruthlessly effective.”
In this Fall series, we will start at the beginning, with the basics and explore a variety of essential movements that when combined, allow us to engage in complex functional activities like walking, gardening and driving. The emphasis will include flexion (think bending), extension (think arching), side bending, and rotation (think turning). Since functional movements are complex and involve the use of a combination of these basic patterns, improvement in one can improve overall coordination and ease. By refining and clarifying each of these fundamental movements, we can uncover areas of dis-ease and discover new ways of moving. Learning in this way provides the opportunity for overall movement proficiency, thereby finding greater vitality, confidence, and ease in daily activities.
Please join me in starting at the “Beginning” with the Fall Series of Moving Well.
