Series 2 – Revisiting the Learning of Our Youth

“Learning to inhibit unwanted contraction of muscles that function without or in spite of, our will, is the main task of coordinated action.” Moshe Feldenkrais

In reading some of my Feldenkrais materials, one well known trainer asked a very interesting question. The question was simple: How do we best organize ourselves? What does this even mean??

In school, much was learned through rote and repetition. We were guided or directed through instruction on how to do this and that and we did the best we could. We were compelled and encouraged to imitate the instructor or model provided. This was school learning.

Another kind of learning in our past was what some would call more natural and organic. We can consider it more of an experiential and discovery. That was how we discovered how to organize important movement patterns and learned to roll, sit, crawl and walk. We sensed ourselves, made a few errors, tried again and eventually skills developed! It is rather remarkable!

Join me in Series 2 of Aging Gracefully as we revisit, discover, clarify and refine fundamental movement patterns we learned in our youth that will promote overall coordination, balance and ease in our daily activities.
