Aging Gracefully
What does it mean to age gracefully? Does it mean to expect to have pain and to move with less ease and mobility? Perhaps one accepts balance and function will deteriorate. It is what it is?
Maybe not.
Acceptance of degenerative aspects of aging is one way of moving through life. One possibility. There IS another option.
Rather than expecting to decline, the Feldenkrais Method offers an invitation to develop a clear sense of our internal somatic sensations; our interoceptive awareness. By attending to ourselves with greater awareness and attention, along with alternate patterns of movement, practicing Awareness Through Movement offers a profound learning process. It is an opportunity to age gracefully in a positive direction. Learning = Change and Change takes time. With a playful open attitude and attentive practice, one CAN learn to move with improved balance, mobility, reduced pain, and overall greater ease as we age.
According to Ruthy Alon, an inspiring Feldenkrais teacher, trainer and octogenarian:
“Improvement of specific movements in the process of learning becomes merely a bonus, the real gain being that your life takes on a new, positive direction. This means that with the passing of each day and each year you are able to perform every act in an increasingly better way – more efficiently, more wisely, more precisely and economically – provided that you have not relinquished your determination to seek these qualities.”
