HANDling Through the Day

I recall not too long ago, when I tried to open a jar of pickles that had been previously opened, it seemed to require more effort than necessary. When did opening jars become difficult for me?

Then there was the time I was lifting a pan out of the drawer…

It used to be effortless to get the clasp of my necklace open…

Our hands are such an important part of our life. We use them every day for so many different purposes. We use them to express love, to assist others, to create something special, to cook, plant gardens, write notes, wave hello and the list goes on.

Recently, a friend of ours had surgery on his hand. He expressed how difficult it was, especially at first, to function with only one hand. He also told us how the experience caused him to reflect on the life of my mother-in-law who was born with one arm. She not only raised 9 children, but held a job requiring her to use a typewriter effectively… and she did! She was also an amazing cook. Her knitting was flawless, and intricately or what one might say simply incredible! Clearly, she knew how to “Handle” her way through the day with great skill.

How do you “HANDle” your day?

In this next series of Feldenkrais® lessons, we will explore and discover the use of our hands from new perspectives and through less familiar connections. Our hands are not separate appendages, but rather are intricately connected with our whole self. With curiosity and attention, we can experience increased ease, strength and reduced pain in the use of our hands.
